Highlights of the fight between a prime Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey in 2010 where Pacquiao makes his first defense of his WBO Welterweight title which he won by knocking out Miguel Cotto (in one of his best performances) in 2009.
Clottey was ranked No. 5 by the WBO at the time of this fight and was a 5-1 underdog against a prime Pacquiao. Certain observers believed that Clottey's strength and size would be too much for the naturally smaller Manny Pacquiao.
However, Pacquiao was considered to be at his absolute best at this point of his career as he last lost a fight in March 2005 against Erik Morales and since then racked up a record of 11-0 prior to facing Clottey with huge wins over Oscar Larios, Hector Velazquez, Jorge Solis, Marco Antonio Barrera, David Diaz, Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya, Erik Morales (2x) and perhaps his bests two of his biggest triumphs; Cotto and Hatton.
Although this fight is considered to be a shutdown as Clottey was swamped with Pacquiao's unflinching volume punching, Clottey in a few instances managed to land a few clean, accurate combinations in the fight.
However, due to Clottey's extremely low activity rate he was unable to make a difference in the scorecards as he refused to take the risks of being hit by Pacquiao's barrage of shots.
Pacquiao won by a lopsided UD with scores of 120-108, 119-109 and 119-109. Harold Lederman gave every round to Pacquiao with a score of 120-108.
Interestingly, I thought Clottey did enough to win two rounds in my card.
Clottey's regular trainer Kwame Asante was unable to obtain a visa to enter the United States, thus for this fight he was trained by Lenny DeJesus.
