Fight of the Year 2013; reigning WBO Welterweight Champion Timothy Bradley aka “Desert Storm” takes on “Siberian Rocky” Ruslan Provodnikov. This is Bradley’s 1st title defense since winning the WBO strap via a highly controversial SD against the legendary Manny Pacquiao back in June 2012. As for Provodnikov, this was his 1st world title opportunity as well as his 1st fight at 147 pounds.
Prefight records; Bradley 29(12)-0, Provodnikov 22(15)-1.
Going into the fight, the defending world champion had notable wins over Miguel Vazquez, Kendall Holt, Junior Witter, Joel Casamayor & Lamont Peterson. On the other hand, Provodnikov the first time world title challenger had beaten the likes of Emanuel Augustus & DeMarcus Corley.
In the opening round, Bradley who’s a good boxer opted to trade with the hard punching Ruslan who hurt him badly. A critical moment occurred when Bradley went down on his knees on what appeared to be a delayed reaction after an barrage of nlows from Provodnikov.
Referee Pat Russell did rule it a knockdown (which might have been a critical decision to the outcome).
Bradley was hurt again in the following round, and at one point appeared to be nearly knocked out but gamely came back to exchange blows with the Siberian Rocky.
From the 3rd frame on, the reigning champion started to box and used his footwork at the advice of his corner and won several rounds convincingly. But in the last 30 seconds of the 6th, Timothy was rocked with a gigantic right hand, and he retaliated in a highly memorable exchange as the crowd rose to their feet.
Provodnikov appeared to be fatigued entering the second half, as Bradley continues to outbox him.
Entering the late rounds, Provodnikov’s left eye is badly swollen, cut and bleeding. Freddie Roach told him to show him something or he will stop the fight thus the Siberian Rocky stepped up his game entering the last 2 rounds.
In the final stanza, Bradley was still outboxing the Siberian Rocky who had no answers to Bradley’s slick boxing skills. But the determined challenger managed to connect with a monstrous right hand, and the wobbled World Champion was lured into an exchange once again.
This time, the exchange clearly favored Provodnikov as Bradley went down on his knees after an accumulation of power shots with about 10 seconds left in the fight.
Bradley managed to make it to the final bell in what have been a tremendously exciting World Welterweight Title fight!
Both fighters showed respect for each other.
After 36 minutes of boxing, the reigning World Champion retained his WBO Welterweight Championship with scores of 115-112 & 114-113 (2x).
By CompuBox Punch States, Bradley threw precisely 1000 punches (347 landed) to 676 (218 landed) by Provodnikov.
Ring Magazine & the Boxing Writers Association of America named Bradley vs Provodnikov as their Fight of the Year 2013.
